Retirement Living Reimagined: The Dan Mo Residence

Architect Ta-Hsiu Lee's Award-Winning Design Embraces Minimalism and Tranquility

Inspired by the purity of a lotus, Ta-Hsiu Lee's Dan Mo Residence is a retirement living space that embodies tranquility and simplicity. The design, which won the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2022, reflects the life outlook of its retiree owner and challenges conventional architectural norms.

The 440-square-meter residence, located in Taichung, was completed in February 2020. Its design is a unique blend of form and function, with architectural elements that mimic the parallel pattern on a lotus petal. The choice of the lotus as a design motif is a subtle reflection of the residence owner's life value of simplicity.

What sets the Dan Mo Residence apart is its unique use of mortar. The designer carefully deployed the mortar on the surface to achieve a specific texture and pattern. After applying a special technique, the mortar becomes tougher, denser, and resistant to pollution and corrosion from wind and rain.

The building's design also prioritizes minimal material consumption. Apart from the external tile cladding used for water channeling, no surface treatment or cladding is applied to the rest of the building surfaces, inside and out. This approach reflects the designer's commitment to material minimization over the conventional use of green materials.

The interior layout of the residence fosters fluidity and connectivity among different functional spaces. The first floor features a circular path that encourages family and friendly interactions. The second floor's design radiates outwards from the family room, ensuring optimal family interactions.

One of the design challenges was to change the common impression of cuboids placed only horizontally and vertically. By whirling the cuboid elements and applying them on the tilted rooftop building structure, the designer created a different visual perception. This technique makes the three-floor building look like a two-floor building, reducing the sense of oppression and allowing more sunlight to shine on the street.

The Dan Mo Residence is a testament to the endless possibilities between complete flatness and excessive decorating in the performance of the building wall. The designer applied adequate yet detailed patterns onto the flat concrete to avoid dullness, creating an environment that offers enduring comfort. This design approach not only meets the functional purpose of a living space but also takes care of the resident's state of mind.

The residence's design, which symbolizes purity and serenity, reflects the life outlook of its retiree owner. It is a retirement residence that stands out from the complex business environment and embodies a humble life. Winning the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2022, the Dan Mo Residence is a remarkable example of innovative and professionally remarkable design that introduces positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
